“It’s an incredible day for me and it is really special because this result is a surprise, because yesterday for me was really difficult and I did not have the pace to stay in front to fight for the podium’ – Andrea Iannone.
Andrea Iannone reflected on a memorable day at his home race at the Italian Grand Prix at Mugello after finishing as the runner-up on the Ducati.
Iannone, who had put the GP15 on pole, overcame the odds to secure a magnificent rostrum result after struggling with pain in his shoulder in the wake of his spill at Mugello in a private test prior to the French round at Le Mans.
Nonetheless, he persevered and had enough in reserve to stay in front of the hard-charging Valentino Rossi in the closing stages to take second place behind Movistar Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo, reducing the gap to team-mate Andrea Dovizioso in third place in the championship to only two points after Dovi retired from the race with a rear chatter problem.
“It’s an incredible day for me and it is really special because this result is a surprise, because yesterday for me was really difficult and I did not have the pace to stay in front to fight for the podium,” said Iannone.
“The shoulder is not at 100 per-cent but yesterday I talk a lot with the guys at the Clinica Mobile and they helped me a lot with injections for the race and I’m really lucky for this.
“For sure Ducati improved my bike in the warm-up because yesterday I asked for a little bit of help with the bike because the pace was not the best. This morning I tried the second bike and it improved, especially in the braking point and when I go inside the corner and this is really important in this track.”
Iannone became embroiled in a fierce battle for second place with Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez, which came to a dramatic end when the world champion slid off six laps from the finish.
“My pace was not so bad and I fought a lot with Marc for the second time this year and for sure it was really difficult, but I tried my best and I managed really good my shoulder,” he said.
“In this race the principal problem is the pain, the energy in my arm, and yesterday I worked with my physiotherapist with elastic to improve my muscle a little bit and this improved a little bit the situation.
“This is a really important race and I am so happy for this.”
